What this is: an indicative price-band estimate based on wall face area (length x height) and typical installed $/square-metre bands for each material in the Newcastle market. It is not a quote and does not bind any contractor.

Method: your wall length and height are multiplied to give the wall face area in square metres, that area is multiplied by the low and high $/m2 figures for the selected material, and the result is then scaled by a height complexity factor - 0.75 at or under 600mm, 1.0 from 600mm to 1m, 1.45 from 1m to 2m and 1.7 above 2m. Height is scaled as well as multiplied because footing depth, drainage and engineering all step up with height, so a taller wall costs more per square metre, not just more square metres. The estimate excludes excavation, drainage, engineering fees, difficult access and GST, all priced separately by your licensed contractor.

Indicative only: the $/m2 bands above are general Newcastle-market ranges (equal to the per-lineal-metre figure for a wall 1m high) and sit inside the published NSW installed ranges for each material; besser block and gabion use a wider indicative band because no Newcastle-specific figure could be independently confirmed for them. The height bands are drawn from NSW cost guides that price retaining walls in under-600mm, 600mm-1m and over-1m tiers. Treat every figure as a starting point, not an audited rate - your contractor's written quote is the number that matters. Assumptions: the estimate ignores site-specific factors - soil type, rock excavation, drainage scope and access - and the height factor is a broad market adjustment, not a structural calculation for your wall. A wall more than 600mm high, or close to a boundary, may need council approval and an engineer's design to AS 4678; engineering fees are not included in the figures shown and typically add several hundred to a couple of thousand dollars on a residential job.
