The material is the last decision, not the first. A terrace holding 400mm of garden soil and a wall propping up a driveway turning circle are different structures even at identical height, because the driveway puts a surcharge load on the back of the wall that a garden bed never will. Work out three things before you shortlist a material: the retained height measured from finished ground on the low side, whether anything heavy sits within a wall-height distance behind it, and where the water that collects behind the wall is going to go. Those answers rule out most of the list on their own, and they are also the first questions any contractor worth quoting will put to you.
Height is where the shortlist narrows fastest. Under 600mm you have the widest choice of materials and the simplest approval position. Above that mark the wall is being designed rather than assembled, and a system that scales into an engineered design without being rebuilt from scratch starts to earn the extra money it costs.
Where the money goes on a Newcastle job
Homeowners tend to price the wall and forget the ground. On a typical quote around here, the visible material is rarely the largest line. Excavation and spoil removal, footings sized for the soil rather than the height, the subsoil drain and its aggregate, and pulling out whatever failed before routinely add up to more than the sleepers or blocks themselves. Access moves the figure more than anything else: a rear yard reached only through a narrow side gate turns machine work into barrow work and can add days to an otherwise identical wall.
That is why a per-metre rate quoted sight unseen is close to meaningless. Two walls of matching length and height on neighbouring streets can differ by half again once soil, fall and access are counted. Ask for the inclusions in writing and compare those, not the headline number.
